MRC in the News

March 2004

Many media outlets — radio, television and print — regularly feature MRC guests on their programs, quote MRC spokespeople in their articles, and cite MRC research in their stories. Below is a sampling of MRC making news in the news media. Links are provided when available, and were active when posted.

"Inside Politics," by Greg Pierce
March 26, 2004

"The news divisions of ABC, NBC and CBS acted as cheerleaders for former terrorism official Richard A. Clarke, despite considerable evidence that Mr. Clarke was acting as a political partisan, the Media Research Center reports at www.mediaresearch.org.

"'Several events on Wednesday undermined former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke's contention that the Bush team's failure to adequately pursue al Qaeda in its first months in office made the attacks possible,' the conservative media watchdog said in a summary of Wednesday's news broadcasts..."

"Big Media Mavens Lack Proper Balance and Perspective," by Quin Hilyer
March 25, 2004

"...Here was columnist Robert Scheer of the Los Angeles Times saying the media was so wary of seeming unpatriotic that it failed to challenge the White House line.

"There is no doubt that there is an atmosphere of fear in the media of being out of sync with the punitive government," he said.

"Punitive government? Fear? Give us a break. This nation arguably has the freest press in the history of the world. This isn't the Soviet Union, fergoshsakes. Scheer and his colleagues at the Berkeley conference sound like they inhabit the fevered conspiracy world of Oliver Stone.

"By a quirk of timing, I was attending a media critique of an entirely different sort last week. It was hosted by a conservative watchdog group called the Media Research Center, dedicated to chronicling examples of liberal bias in the "elite" media...."

"Conservatives Misplaced Compassion for Mel Gibson," by Kathleen Parker
March 24, 2004

"A few nights ago, I attended the conservative Media Research Center's Annual Dishonor Awards, an Academy Awards spoof that "honors" the most egregious perpetrators of liberal bias in the media. Featured were several media stars from conservative ranks, as well as "surprise" guests Sam Donaldson and Rush Limbaugh.

"Throughout the evening, I was struck by speakers' repeated invocations of Gibson. They were trying to make the point that Gibson was a victim of liberal media bias. At long last, a native-born, movie-star poster boy of their very own.

"What's wrong with that? Nothing except that Gibson steadfastly refuses to convincingly distance himself from Holocaust deniers and minimizers. Several times during the past several months, and most recently in an interview with Peggy Noonan for the March issue of Reader's Digest, Gibson has avoided giving a clear answer..."

"Inside Politics" by Greg Pierce
March 24, 2004

"CBS and ABC on Monday night ran full stories on how the FBI trailed antiwar activist John Kerry in the early 1970s, but only ABC's Dan Harris pointed out what CBS's Byron Pitts missed, how the FBI 'documents do show that some of Kerry's recent statements about his antiwar activism are inaccurate,' " the Media Research Center reports.

"Both March 22 stories were prompted by an article in that day's Los Angeles Times about the FBI documents obtained a few years ago by a book author," Brent Baker writes at www.mediaresearch.org...."

Fox News Channel
Hannity & Colmes
March 23, 2004

Alan Colmes: Last week the Media Research Center handed out what they called the Dishonors Awards, roasting the most outrageously biased liberal media reporters of 2003.

Rush Limbaugh made a surprise appearance at the event and here is what he had to say about liberals in this country.

Rush Limbaugh, Radio Talk Show Host: "You hear about this divided country, partisan left and partisan right, and we're never going to get together. That's right.

Somebody wrote me the other day, how are we going to bridge the divide? I said we don't bridge the divide, we defeat them. We're not interested in getting along with them. We're interested in defeating them.

I mean, it's OK to get along with them in a situation like this, but why get along with them if you have to compromise what your core beliefs are? Why do that? They don't care to get along with us. Look at Bush.

Bush has done everything he can to make friends with these people, from Ted Kennedy writing the education bill to a new Medicare entitlement.

They hate his guts more than they hated Ronald Reagan and that's saying something. They hate his guts more than they can express it. They hate his guts because he connects with people and the people love him and he can be honest. They can't be.

They can't be honest about who they are. When they're liberals in the media, they can't say they're liberals, they have to say they're objective or progressive or act perplexed. Liberals in politics can't dare admit who they are.

That's why Howard Dean got his knees cut off by Bill Clinton and the rest of them and Gephardt, because he was the walking, talking identification of a modern day liberal.

They can't get elected as -- labeled as liberals. People will not vote for them, particularly in national elections, so they have to camouflage.

John Kerry called himself a conservative the other day before he was a liberal. You can't keep up these people. They will do anything they can to camouflage who they are.

Think of this. They have positioned themselves on most issues where anything good for America is bad for them. The media is with them in this.

Today there was this big story about we have this -- Musharraf said we got top level targets surrounded in Pakistan. So everybody said, "Hmm." The buzz began and everybody thought it was bin Laden so people started asking, "No, it's one of the top four."

You know, folks, when the moment John Kerry and anybody else in the Democratic Party and the House or Senate, anywhere else, is watching CNN and they see that we may be on the verge of capturing bin Laden, they're going, "Damn it. What are we going to do about this?"

Stop and think about that, though. Stop -- good news for America is a problem for them. These are people -- these are people who care more about whether Europeans like them than whether terrorists are killing us.

They are more concerned with getting along with European socialists. Here is Kerry this foreign leader comment of his. I mean, it's not just Kerry meeting with them. Joe Biden is meeting with some European socialists. It was in a Norway paper. Hillary Clinton has met. They're all meeting with European socialists.

And people call me and say well, why do you think Kerry might not be able to do a better job than Bush in putting together a coalition in Iraq? You don't understand. Kerry doesn't want the United States to lead. U.S. media doesn't want the United States to lead. They want us to agree with France and Germany. They want Germany and France to set the stage on what happens in Iraq and that's what Kerry will do. That's why we cannot trust the defense of this country to these people any longer.

And you used not to be able to say this. Thank you. You used to not be able to say this kind of thing. And if you did say it people said I can't believe you're saying it. Some of you may be saying it now.

But there's a new era now. When you say these things -- and by the way, these are not opinions of mine. This is the result of observation. I have watched. I have heard Democrats say and media eagerly reported back during the bubble of the stock market, and the early days of the Bush administration, the early days of the recession, it was Gephardt or somebody said, you know, with a big smile, for every hundred point drop we pick up a seat in the House. They were happy with bad news.

So I'm not making it up nor do we have to make it up. We just listen to their glee when things go badly, when the unemployment numbers come out or the employment numbers are not as good. They're happy.

Host Eric Burns: Quick take headline No. 2: "What, Exactly, Is the Goal of the Poll?"

When a "CBS News" poll found Kerry leading Bush, it was reported on the "CBS Evening News" February 16. When another "CBS News" poll found Kerry leading Bush, it was reported on the "CBS Evening News" two weeks later. But when another "CBS News" poll two weeks after that found Bush leading Kerry, the "CBS Evening News" did not run the story, although CBSNews.com did. And we make what of this -- Jim.

Jim Pinkerton: All you can do is say exhibit 12 million in the media bias.

Neal Gabler: May I say something else?

Burns: After I give you CBS's point of view on this.

Gabler: That's what I was just going to say, that CBS had said that the reason they did not run the poll is because it was taken before the Madrid blasts, which they believe made the poll inaccurate.

Cal Thomas: Who care what they think about the poll? Let them publish the poll and let the people react. We don't need any kind of exegesis of the poll. They don't do it with the other polls.

Thomas: Excuse me. When Kerry is ahead, they report it and don't say, well, maybe that might be skewed because of something else that happened or didn't happen. Just report the poll. That's all they need to do.

Pinkerton: And we might not believe what they say when they get caught.

Hall: Well, you know, I think people see their bias confirmed in this -- I mean see what they perceive as bias confirmed. And I think all the more reason to run the dadgum (ph) second-day story or whatever.

Burns: Isn't that maybe an issue, Neal, that supercedes all the others, that you do set yourself up for particularly that kind of criticism, even if you think the poll might be invalidated.

Gabler: Well, I think they should have shown the results and they should have said, look, these results may have been invalidated. That would seem to be the appropriate way of doing it.

(This is a partial transcript from Rush Limbaugh's opening monologue on March 19 The Rush Limbaugh Show)

"I flew to Washington late yesterday afternoon and was a surprise guest and speaker at the Media Research Center's Annual Dishonor Awards. This is Brent Bozell's group, or as he was once referred to by Michael Kinsley in a conversation with me, "El Brent Bozo." Liberals hate Brent Bozell. He documents their excess, idiocy, and bias.

"Every year the Media Research Center gathers in the Omni Shoreham hotel in Washington to honor the most outrageous, funniest, most offensive liberal media statements and quotes, from the past year. I was supposed to go last year and I couldn't. I tried to go but, we couldn't get off the ground here for two and a half hours because of weather. So I went to make up for not making it last year...

"I had a great time and I just want to thank everybody that was there. There were a lot of spotlights, and I couldn't recognize anybody in the audience. I had to leave right after, and I rolled back into town at 3:30 AM.

"I want to thank Brent for inviting me and everybody who was there. You made my day. It was just fabulous. You people were great. A number of you call here on a regular basis, complaining about the mainstream media and I keep trying to tell you that they're losing. They're losing audience, and we're gaining audience. We're gaining ground, they're losing ground. Their era of dominant influence is over. They no longer have a monopoly.

"As I said to the assembled gathering of 850 who were on their feet last night, the point is not to convince liberals. The idea is not to persuade them. The objective is to defeat them. And that's what we're doing...

ABC World News Tonight led with, ‘Increasingly, Governor Bush is seen to be falling behind in the polls, which may test his often-stated desire to bring a new tone of civility to politics. Well today he was caught on tape with a decidedly uncivil comment.’

NBC Nightly News contained the following in its lead story: ‘Governor Bush may have stepped on his message of restoring honor and dignity to the White House today when a microphone caught him making an undignified remark about a newspaper reporter.’”

"He recounted the praise critics gave another movie about Jesus -- Martin Scorsese's 'The Last Temptation of Christ.' The 1988 film grossly misrepresented the biblical Jesus, suggesting he entertained lustful thoughts about Mary Magdalene, claimed he was not divine and had 'Lucifer inside him.'

"Bozell mentioned The Washington Post's Ann Hornaday's endorsement of The Last Temptation and rejection of The Passion.

"'But now that 'The Passion of the Christ' is, with any luck, on its way out of theaters,' Hornaday wrote, 'it's a good time to reassess Scorsese's movie, whose lyricism and meaning and spiritual heft have grown with time....
