Bozell Praises Chris Matthews for Dumping Dick Morris From His Show

ALEXANDRIA, Va. --- Media Research Center Chairman Brent Bozell praised political television talk show host Christopher Matthews for dismissing from his show political consultant Dick Morris after Morris made a bigoted remark on Hardball With Chris Matthews on CNBC.

"Chris Matthews showed a refreshing sensitivity to people of faith virtually unseen or unheard of in today's national media. He deserves praise for publicly chastising, then dismissing from his show Dick Morris, whose on-air religious bigotry was offensive and has no place in political debates," Bozell said.

This past Friday Matthews hosted Morris on the issue of former Gov. William Weld's battle to be named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. A transcript of the remarks in question follows:

MORRIS: In the last analysis what Weld is trying to do is to become the poster boy for the moderate Republicans and he's trying to be gaveled down, to be screwed over by Jesse Helms. It's a little bit like getting to lead a church after being crucified.

MATTHEWS: I didn't like that last remark from Dick Morris one bit.

Shortly thereafter Matthews publicly announced he was cutting Morris off and, with that, Morris vanished from the screen. Then, in his "Last Word" segment with which he closes each show, Matthews further explained why he could no longer keep Morris on the air.

"There's certain things I'll let people say on this show and certain things I will not let them say. And one, I will not let them debunk anybody's race or religion, or make fun of anything like that on this program. Do it somewhere else," Matthews said.

"People who cherish their faith owe a debt of gratitude to Chris Matthews today, and I hope they will let him know it," Bozell said.
