Political Scandal Rocks Public Broadcasting ...

Bozell Urges IRS and Congress to Investigate in Light of Latest Political Stench

Tell a friend about this site

"WGBH-TV, Boston's publicly funded station, has been swapping names of contributors with the Democratic Party since 1994, a party official said yesterday, handing over a total of more than 32,000 names despite clear prohibitions against tax-exempt groups engaging in political acts. ... An official at WGBH initially downplayed the incident, saying it was a onetime mistake committed by new employees who did not understand the rules. But last night, Jenny Backus, spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, said the party has been sharing donor information with the public television station for years and to a much greater extent than WGBH had admitted" (Anne E. Kornblut, BOSTON GLOBE, July 15, 1999).

ALEXANDRIA, Va. --- Media Research Center Chairman Brent Bozell called for "an immediate IRS investigation" into WGBH and PBS, and for Congress to take action as well.

"If illegally providing donor lists to the Democratic National Committee doesn't spur a Republican Congress to act immediately on this then they're brain dead," Bozell said. "For over 30 years PBS has attacked conservatives, Republicans, people of faith and hard-working Americans through its biased programming - all funded by the same taxpayers they have attacked. There must be an immediate IRS investigation as well."

"The U.S. taxpayer is bankrolling PBS' fundraising efforts. PBS is facilitating the DNC's fundraising efforts. It's bad enough that the taxpayer has to fund a rich behemoth like PBS, but now the taxpayer is funding the DNC too," Bozell added.
